• Edited Hubble Space Telescope image of the surface of the star Betelgeuse. (Betelgeuse is one of the very few stars to have their surface imaged, being so large and relatively close (~600 light years) from the Earth. Enlarged variant.
• Lately (the past year or so), the brightness of Betelgeuse has diminished significantly - more than has been observed (and recorded) in the past. Betelgeuse is a variable star so brightness variances are expected. Dimming is also expected to occur before a star goes supernova, and Betelgeuse will definitely explode as a supernova someday. From what I've read, astronomers do not expect Betelgeuse to explode anytime soon (eg, within the next 1000 years or so).
• When Betelgeuse does explode, the Earth will not be harmed in the least - the only damage will be done to the outline of the constellation of Orion. Given that Betelgeuse is over 600 light years away, we're far to distant for harm to occur.
• Original caption: This is the first direct image of a star other than the Sun, made with the Hubble Space Telescope. Called Alpha Orionis, or Betelgeuse, it is a red supergiant star marking the shoulder of the winter constellation Orion the Hunter. The Hubble image reveals a huge ultraviolet atmosphere with a mysterious hot spot on the stellar behemoth's surface. The enormous bright spot, more than ten times the diameter of Earth, is at least 2, 000 Kelvin degrees hotter than the surface of the star.
