- 555 California Street, formerly known as the Bank of America Center, was built in 1969 by Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, Pietro Belluschi, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as the headquarters for the Bank of America. It served that function until 1998 when headquarters were moved to Charlotte after a merger with NationsBank. At completion, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River, surpassed by the Transamerica Pyramid in 1972. The 52-floor tower incorporates thousands of bay windows thanks to its unique design, meant to improve the rental value.
