• Official designation Light Tank (Airborne), M22
• British serial T158979.
• Built 1943 by Marmon Herrington Co. Indianapolis.
• The Locust was specifically designed to a British request for a tank capable of being transported in to Battle by Glider. The intention was to replace the existing Tetrarch tanks, which were not designed for the purpose.
• Originally designated the T9E1, it was also intended that the turret by removed so it could be carried underneath a Douglas C-54 Skymaster (DC-4). By the time it was in production it was already outdated, so it never saw US service and the 830 built only served with British forces.
• Their only operational use was in Operation Varsity, supporting the 21st Army Group crossing the river Rhine near Wesel, in late March 1945. Eight Locust were successfully flown to the landing zone in individual Hamilcar gliders, but some were damaged during landing or in crashes, and only four made it to the arranged rendezvous point, of which only two were fully operational.
• Post war remaining Locust saw service as command tanks with the Belgian Army and also replaced older designs in use with the Egyptian Army.
• Sixteen now survive, this one being on display at The Tank Museum, Bovington, Dorset, UK.
