• Tanzania. Lake Manyara region
• The visit is extremely touristy. It is big business over there. It's really one group after the other visiting these villages, and the same performance starting over and over again.
• First they dress you up like a Masai, like it or not.
• Then you are welcomed with a dance performed by the men while the woman are singing.
• After that there's the mandatory dancing with the tourists. Not for me, thank you.
• Then you are split up in small groups of 2 persons and led into one of the huts by one of the men; There he explains about their way of living, which is interesting. There really is not enough space in those huts for more than 3 people.
• The woman are the ones responsible for the huts, and they're the ones building them.
• There are just a few household iems in the huts, mainly for cooking and conserving milk or meat.
• There are 2 beds, separated by a wall made of wooden branches. One of the beds is for the parents, and the other for the smaller children. Once the children get a bit older they build another hut next to the main one, and the older children sleep there until they're old enough to get married. Strangely enough they do not marry very young like in other tribes. Most of them are well over 20 when they get married.
• After the hut experience you get to walk around some more in the village where you are strategically directed to their souvenir stalls. Souvenir prices are scandalously high. You have to bargain very well and even then you will pay a lot more than in Mto wa Mbu village.
• This kind of visit is not really my cup of tea, but I still got some nice pictures out of it.
