Fotografie + English: The spectacular aftermath of a 360 million year old cosmic collision is revealed in great detail in this image from ESO’s Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory. Among the debris surrounding the elliptical galaxy NGC 5291 at the centre is a rare and mysterious young dwarf galaxy, which appears as a bright clump towards the right of the image. This object is providing astronomers with an excellent opportunity to learn more about similar galaxies that are expected to be common in the early Universe, but are normally too faint and distant to be observed by current telescopes.

  Nový snímek pořízený pomocí dalekohledu ESO/VLT na observatoři Paranal v Chile odhaluje v působivých detailech následky kosmické kolize, ke které došlo zhruba před 360 miliony lety. Mezi ostatními pozůstatky leží záhadná mladá trpasličí galaxie, která astronomům nabízí výjimečnou možnost zjistit více o podobných objektech. Předpokládá se totiž, že podobné galaxie se v mladém vesmíru vyskytovaly mnohem častěji než dnes. Pro pozorování současnou technikou jsou však příliš vzdálené a slabé.

  Le conseguenze spettacolari di una collisione cosmica di 360 milioni di anni fa sono rivelate in dettaglio nelle nuove immagini del VLT (Very Large Telescope) dell'ESO all'Osservatorio del Paranal. Tra le carcasse che circondano la galassia ellittica NGC 5291, al centro, si trova una giovane galassia nana rara e misteriosa che si mostra come un grumo brillante sulla destra dell'immagine. Questo oggetto fornisce agli astronomi un'eccellente opportunità di capire meglio questo tipo di galassie, che ci si aspetta siano comuni nell'Universo primordiale ma troppo deboli e distanti per essere osservate con gli odierni telescopi.
